Critical Analysis

Why Professionals Are Moving to DocTick

Two Different Kinds of Tool

ShareFile is a secure file-sharing and client portal platform, with tiers that add e-signature, an enhanced client portal and a virtual data room. DocTick is narrower: it sends a client an itemized checklist, and the client uploads each item from their phone or computer. If you need to share large files back and forth, sign documents, or host a data room, ShareFile covers much more. If your recurring job is "get these 8 documents from this client and tell me what is missing," DocTick is built for exactly that and nothing else.

Seat Minimums and Plan Tiers

Per ShareFile's pricing page (October 2026), Advanced, Premium and Enterprise each have a 3-user minimum, and the Virtual Data Room plan has a 5-user minimum. Request Lists are listed on Premium and above; Advanced includes File Drop Links. Prices are per user per month, and the page shows two figures per plan (the lower appears to be the annual rate). For a solo practitioner or a two-person firm, that minimum is the main cost difference. DocTick Pro is $14.99/month for the whole account, and the Free plan covers up to 3 active requests.

Where the Files End Up

With DocTick, each client upload goes into your own Google Drive, in a folder structure, using the restricted drive.file scope. If you stop using DocTick, the files are still in your Drive. ShareFile keeps files in its own storage, with 3TB base plus 1TB per license on the Advanced, Premium and Enterprise plans. That is a real advantage if you want a dedicated, large document repository separate from Google Workspace.
